Everything beneath the novel — full spoilers for Into Alignment.
The research questions in this book do not belong to Into Alignment alone. The same author has written other fiction and nonfiction about authority, automation, and the people who remain accountable when systems act. Human Quotient supplies a public way to say how those books were made. The assignments below are attestations, not verdicts on whether a book is good.
Human Quotient
Human Quotient is a 0–10 scale for describing how much human effort, intention, and craft went into a piece of work. It is a self-assessment by the creator. It is not an AI detector. It is not a quality score. A carefully assembled generated draft can be useful; a handmade draft can be wrong. The number describes the process.
HQ 8, Authored, means the human wrote the work. AI may have been used for light polish: grammar, word choice, tightening. The voice, ideas, and structure remain human.1 HQ 6, Assembled, means the human wrote some sections and AI wrote others; the human then assembled, reviewed, and takes responsibility for the complete work.2
Into Alignment is assigned HQ 8. This research companion is assigned HQ 6. The novel was drafted, revised, and repeatedly reviewed as authored work. The companion combines human research direction, source checking, and revision with substantial machine drafting of synthesis and explanation. The split is intentional: the story is authored; the technical mapping was assembled and then reviewed.
The scores do not say which book a reader should prefer. They say how each one was made. Further detail lives at humanquotient.ai.
The Condition Set
The Condition Set is a near-future thriller trilogy about the people standing between automated systems and the lives those systems reorganize. It follows Rob Coleman through three moments of the same question: who can actually watch the machines.
- Redundant asks who gets cut.
- Contingent asks who gets used.
- Essential asks who gets protected.
Those novels are not sequels to Into Alignment, and this companion is not a decoder for them. They share a concern with cost, authority, signatures, and what remains human when a system can act. The trilogy’s site, timeline, and related material are at theconditionset.com.3
Orchestrator
Orchestrator is a nonfiction book about the emerging role of the person who directs agentic tools, combines their output, designs the workflows around them, and remains accountable for systems that act. The orchestrator does not necessarily write every line. The work is to guide tools, invent architectures, and keep a human responsible for what those systems do.
Chapter 4 of this companion uses orchestration as a technical term for routing, context, tools, and control. The book at readorchestrator.com treats the same problem as a profession: what the job is becoming, how it fails, and what a person in that role has to know.4
The AI Developer’s Field Guide
The AI Developer’s Field Guide, published at slopcodex.com, is an attempt at humor. It names the characters and failure modes of AI-assisted coding as archetypes, monsters, spells, and artifacts: the Cleric who trusts the process, the Fighter who merges first, the Wizard who treats every problem as a prompt.
The joke is diagnostic. The patterns are recognizable because they are common. The field guide is not a research monograph and should not be read as one. It is a bestiary for teams who want to name the pattern instead of blaming the person.5
